Cosmic Landscapes, the land art of Charles Jencks - from 21/05/15
This exhibition explores Crawick Multiverse, a major land restoration project in Dumfries & Galloway, utilising landscape art to transform a former open cast coal mine into an outdoor space that can be enjoyed by future generations. This new landscape is set to open to the public in June 2015.
Commissioned by the Duke of Buccleuch and designed by globally-renowned land artist and architectural theorist Charles Jencks, Crawick Multiverse is a stunning representation of exciting discoveries and theories of the universe. This world-class landscape design links the themes of space, astronomy and cosmology, and uses the varying ecologies of the site and natural features to create a truly inspiring landmark that will appeal to everyone from art enthusiasts and scientists to the wider community.
This exhibition celebrates the arrival at the Garden Museum of a collection of drawings for the Garden of Cosmic Speculation at Portrack, the first landscape to be designed by Jencks. These will be included in the exhibition alongside models, notes and papers that illustrate the design process behind Crawick and several of Jencks’ other important landscapes in Milan and Newcastle.
