During this hands-on class, you’ll cook and enjoy classic home-style recipes using traditional Bangladeshi pantry staples, including mustard oil and the everyday vegetables that form the heart of family cooking. These simple yet flavourful dishes are both approachable and rewarding, making them a wonderful addition to your home cooking repertoire.
The experience concludes with a relaxed lunch overlooking the museum’s courtyard garden, where you’ll enjoy the dishes you’ve prepared together.
Sample Menu
Aloo Bhorta – mashed potatoes with sautéed onions, dried chillies, fresh coriander and mustard oil, served with rice
Patla Dal – a light lentil dish tempered with garlic and chillies
Beguni – crisp fried aubergine fritters
Shemai – sweet vermicelli pudding with milk
Open to all levels of skills and interests. This class is suitable for Adults 18 and over.
*This class is part of our hands-on monthly masterclass cooking sessions, which focus on specialist topics or advanced cooking techniques. Sessions are usually on Sunday and held in the Garden Museum’s food learning studio. Each class is 3 hours, and will include tastings or a full meal eaten together depending on the course
Dina Begum is a critically acclaimed British-Bangladeshi author, self taught chef and food writer, and the leading voice in Bangladeshi food.
Her first book, The Brick Lane Cookbook (Kitchen Press 2018), was followed by Made in Bangladesh (Hardie Grant 2023), the first mainstream Bangladeshi cookbook, featured on best cookbook lists in Vogue, National Geographic, Waitrose Magazine and Waterstones. Made in Bangladesh was a finalist at the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards 2025.
She has written articles and recipes for publications such as The Telegraph, Whetstone Magazine, Vittles, Food52, and Metro. Dina has featured in a Tesco campaign and micro documentary on Great Big Story, as well as the BBC podcast Mission Curry.
