Gardens

In our series #GMinyourgarden, we’re peeking over the fence into gardens around the world to explore their places in our lives today. This week, Anna's Suffolk garden:

I have always loved gardening and flowers; even before having my own garden I tended window boxes on every windowsill of my London flat. I now live in Stoke by Nayland, a tiny village in the Dedham Vale in Suffolk, having moved here 18 years ago with my husband, one year old daughter and pregnant with our son.

The garden has evolved during this time from a large lawn to what is now a (very) micro flower farm at the front and a gravel garden at the back. During Covid I created a couple of cutting beds so I could grow flowers for the home – I love all the cottage garden classics like hollyhocks, foxgloves, sweet peas and dahlias.

The following year I added more no dig beds, welcomed Gloria (my greenhouse) and soon after launched my business, Spring Cottage Flower Co. It is such a joy to be able to offer my local community beautiful ‘slow’, seasonal flowers that I grow in my garden without chemicals, pesticides or peat.

My growing space has to work hard as it is quite small – there is usually something waiting in the wings to be planted out when there is space! The magic of growing from seed (or bulb or tuber) never grows old and I love planning what I am going to grow with arrangements in mind – thinking about the flowers to come gets me through these cold, dark winter days.
