The Old Rectory, Hamsted
Rectory life often went hand-in-hand with horticulture. This watercolour shows a typically Victorian garden scene, with the gardener kneeling in the sunshine and the ladies in the shade. Garden activities were a popular subject in watercolour painting at this time. The artist probably set up an easel at the back of the house so it was positioned centrally in the scene.
