Vegetable Garden

Patrick George was awarded a bursary to attend art school in Edinburgh. His artistic career was cut short at this stage as he was called up for active service during the Second World War. After the war he demobbed and attended Camberwell School of Art where staff included Victor Pasmore, William Coldstream and Lawrence Gowing.

This painting was produced at George’s home in Suffolk and it illustrates the seasonality of gardening and the period of dormancy and preparation that gardens go through before the regeneration of the spring. This is period of the gardening cycle that is often ignored by artists, as this spell is often perceived as one of inactivity. However, an experienced gardener such as George has taken the opportunity to celebrate this period of planning and preparation, recognising it as just as important in the life-cycle of the garden as any other season.
