Gardens

We’re peeking over the fence into gardens around the world to explore their places in our lives today. This week, Theresa's Dublin garden.

I live in Skerries, a seaside town in County Dublin, in a small home and garden in an estate for the past 19 years but my passion for my garden only started about 10 years ago.

It all started when I joined Instagram and saw people growing these gorgeous big pink blousy roses and I couldn’t believe these kind of roses even existed in real-life and the best part was I could grow them here in my own garden! So for my next birthday in the April, my Mam and me went shopping for my birthday present – I came home with five David Austin Roses and I’ve been hooked ever since!

It started with making a border for the roses and then I just learnt more ever year and got more inspired by all the beautiful gardening accounts on Instagram. I got the confidence up to start growing from seed and started with sweetpea, cosmos and cornflowers. As I became more confident each year, the list of flowers that I grew got longer and longer!

I love looking after all my tiny flower babies, checking them morning and night for growth. It’s just the best hobby and I feel so lucky to have found my passion because it really has changed my life. It’s such a big part of my everyday life now and it makes me so happy coming home to my garden full of gorgeous flowers.

Even though I only have a small garden , I make use of every bit of the space. My front garden, as its concrete and cobblelock, is my container garden. I have big wooden planters full of flowers, window boxes, hanging baskets and a variety of containers. Out the back, each year the grass was dug up to make the borders wider to fit more plants in and now I’m just left with a thin grass path running around the garden. Grass is so overrated anyway!

One of my favourite things in my garden is the addition of my beautiful greenhouse that I bought myself for Christmas two years ago. Living in Ireland we get a lot of wind and rain to deal with, so it’s great being able to do some greenhouse gardening on my lunchbreak if its raining.

I love that there’s always new projects to work on in the garden, for example two years ago I added a small patio with Cotswold stone and a lovely corner sofa. It just feels so enclosed and private since I raised the height of the fences. This year I’d love to add a mini pond made out of old Belfast sink I have. I love that the garden keeps evolving with the seasons and with changes you make so there’s always something exciting to see or be thinking about.

In the summer, one of my favourite flowers to grow are sweetpeas. I grow a lot cause I love cutting and giving them to my family, friends and my neighbours. There’s no better feeling than giving people flowers you have grown and to see how happy they make them!
