At this event held in our purpose built learning studio kitchen, participants will assist Jane while she makes her spicy medlar chutney, and give you a jar to take home. You will also have the opportunity to taste different types of medlars in various forms, and sample other ways of enjoying it such as with cheese and charcuterie.
While the chutney simmers on the stove, Jane will will share her own experiences with this quirky fruit, give a quick history of the medlar, talk about why it has a role to play in our gardens and kitchens, and why its worth reviving.
The group will also meet the museum’s very own medlar tree which proudly sits on the museum’s grounds.
This is primarily a demo based class by Jane, with tastings, for up to 12 participants.
Open to all levels of skills and interests. This class is suitable for Adults 18 and over.
This class is part of our Sunday cookery series with guest tutors, which focus on specialist topics or advanced cooking techniques. Jane is the holder of the Plant Heritage National Collection of medlar trees, Mespilus germanica. At her Norfolk home she cares for her orchard of 117 trees, and hand makes the medlar jelly and medlar chutney which are sold around the UK under her Eastgate Larder brand. She is the author of MEDLARS, Growing & Cooking, which was shortlisted in the 2023 Fortnum & Mason Food and Drink Awards.
