We will start our day with a coffee or tea in the atmospheric sculpture garden at David Harber’s workshop and studio where his beguiling designs are hand-crafted and brought to life by a growing team of skilled artisans. After our refreshments we will have time to view the sculptures before David and his team will give us a personalised tour of the workshop and studio and provide insight into the creative process – from inspiration to final placement.
David is a globally renowned leader in luxury sculptures, sundials and water features. His portfolio of striking designs draws inspiration from the interaction of light, landscape and water to explore reflection, illusion, and the passing of time. His pieces grace some of the most prestigious addresses around the world.
Following a delicious, seasonal lunch at a local country pub, we will make the short journey to David and Sophie Harber’s beautiful and historic home, just a few minutes’ drive from the workshop. Their beautifully restored 16th century mill is set in six acres of water meadows, bordered by a stream, and blends the charm of traditional design with the dynamic language of modern architecture. The actual garden close to the house has changed little in the last 400 years and has some beautiful, ancient Yew trees. A Poplar-lined drive leads to up to the house and a walled garden. There are a mill pond and all manner of aquatic plants. The garden has a wonderful timeless quality.
Surrounded by the stunning countryside, the dialogue between classic and contemporary design flows from the home into the garden beyond. Andrew Duff, Chair of the Society of Garden and Landscape Designers, will lead our tour. He is responsible for the design of the naturalistic garden which features a rich tapestry of elegant long grasses with pathways that frame the view of the sculptures on show in the garden, demonstrating how sculpture is a natural companion for both traditional and contemporary garden settings. We will explore with him how to best place and enjoy art in the landscape.
Our special day ends with our hosts, and a cup of tea or coffee and cake, in the garden before heading back to the station.
