This London Craft Week, Them Outdoors will bring a small group of working British artists to the Garden Museum to explore this question. For those interested in the design of outdoor spaces, this is an opportunity to explore a collection of contemporary sculpture by artists whose work comes to life in an outdoor environment.
The exhibition will also feature a small selection of the gallery’s original, design-led furniture, planters and birdhouses. With a focus on materiality, from shell-covered zinc to cleft oak, aluminium, bronze, marble and ceramics, this exhibition offers an encounter with the tactile beauty of the works in dialogue with the planting in the museum’s Dan Pearson-designed courtyard garden.
Central to Them Outdoors is the belief that objects made for the garden carry their own stories. We are invited to consider these stories with the garden as an active participant, encouraging a connection between maker, material and place – and a deeper personal resonance with the objects and furniture in one’s own garden.
